We are convinced that Jesus is the only way to approach God and has restored the capacity within man to live with God. He Himself said, “I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me;” (John 14:6) We are convinced the best way to understand Jesus’ claims about Himself is to study carefully the primary documents that detail His life and teaching—the New Testament writings of the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. We are convinced that He lowered Himself from His place of equality with God and became human in order to restore our connection with God. (Phil. 2) We are convinced that in His death and resurrection Jesus defeated Satan, sin and death; and that by taking our sins upon Himself on the cross, He paid the ransom price for sin, satisfied the holy perfection of God, and brought humanity into reconciliation with God. To understand how to personally become reconciled to God it is helpful to consider the breadth of Jesus teachings, not only select portions. Jesus taught many things about becoming reconciled to God; three essential elements will be considered here. (1) Repentance. At the beginning of His ministry, Jesus preached this message, “Repent for the Kingdom of Heaven is near.” (Matt. 4, .) We are convinced that repentance as Jesus taught it means being sorry for one’s sins, decisively turning away from them, and reaching toward Jesus and his Kingdom reign. The meaning of repentance is captured in the exchange Jesus had with a woman caught in the very act of adultery. (John 8-) In His great mercy, Jesus did not condemn the woman, but gently called her to repentance with these words, “Go and sin no more.” (2) Faith. Throughout His ministry, Jesus taught that believing in Him leads to eternal life. John 15, etc.) We are convinced that faith is much more than an intellectual belief in the historical facts about Jesus such as His suffering and death. Faith is throwing the whole life upon Jesus as the only way to God; trusting Him to save us from our sins, and a commitment to follow His teaching and the teaching of His apostles in surrender and obedience to Him. We are convinced that true saving faith does not lie dormant; but it produces fruit. (3) Following Jesus as Master Teacher. We are convinced that Jesus’ life was humanity lived to perfection. Therefore and we look to Jesus as the model Human and Master Teacher and we seek to follow both His teachings and His example. “Follow Me…” He said. We believe the Sermon on the Mount is to be obeyed and followed by all of Jesus true followers. In repenting, believing and following Jesus, God does a supernatural miraculous operation in the center part of man which the Bible calls the heart. This operation is a re-generation of the heart of man which re-enables man to be connected to God.
